Siding Installation

New siding changes how your home looks from the street, and if it's installed correctly, it protects the walls behind it for decades.

Siding does two jobs: it gives your home its look, and it sheds water away from the wall assembly. Ironcrest Contracting installs and replaces siding with the same attention on both, because a beautiful wall that traps moisture causes expensive problems later.

Siding options

  • Vinyl siding — low-maintenance and available in many profiles and colours, including insulated vinyl.
  • Fibre cement siding — a durable, paintable product that resists fire and pests and holds a crisp, painted look.
  • Engineered wood siding — the look of wood with improved resistance to moisture compared with natural wood.
  • Metal siding — steel or aluminum panels for a modern look, including vertical and board-and-batten styles.
  • Accents and trim — shakes in gables, board-and-batten sections, corner boards and window surrounds.

How a siding project runs

  1. Assessment. We look at the existing siding, sheathing, windows and trim and check for soft spots or water damage.
  2. Product selection and quote. We review materials, profiles and colours and provide an itemized quote.
  3. Removal and repairs. Old siding comes off, damaged sheathing is repaired, and the wall is prepared.
  4. Weather barrier and flashing. Housewrap or another weather-resistive barrier is installed, with flashing at windows, doors and penetrations.
  5. Siding and trim. Siding, corners, trim and finishing details are installed and the site is cleaned up.

Good to know before you start

Siding replacement is the ideal time to replace older windows and exterior doors, because the openings can be flashed together with the new weather barrier. It's also a good time to update soffit, fascia and eavestroughs. Some materials, including fibre cement, need specific cutting and handling procedures, and colour choices may affect lead times. If we find rot or damaged sheathing behind the existing siding, we'll show you and confirm repair costs in writing before proceeding.

What affects the cost of siding

Siding costs are shaped by the material, the size of the walls and the amount of trim and detail on the house. Vinyl is typically the most affordable, while fibre cement, engineered wood and metal cost more for materials and labour. Removing existing siding, repairing sheathing and installing a new weather barrier add to the cost but give a much better long-term result. Gables, bump-outs, corners and many windows increase cutting and trim work. Insulated siding or added exterior insulation raises the price but can improve comfort. Scaffolding for tall walls also plays a part. We itemize materials, removal, repairs and trim so you can compare options clearly.

Siding questions

Can new siding go over old siding?

It's sometimes possible, but removing the old siding lets us inspect the wall, repair damage and install a proper weather barrier. We'll recommend the right approach after inspection.

How long does siding installation take?

Many homes are completed in about one to two weeks, depending on size, material, trim details and weather.

Which siding lasts the longest?

Durability depends on the product, installation and maintenance. Fibre cement and metal siding are generally very durable; vinyl requires the least maintenance.
