Decks & Porches

A good deck starts below ground. We build decks and porches on proper footings, with framing and railings designed to be safe for years of use.

A deck or porch extends your living space outside. Ironcrest Contracting designs and builds new decks, replaces worn-out ones and adds covered porches, with an emphasis on solid structure first and great-looking finishes second.

What we build

  • Pressure-treated decks — a cost-effective option that can be stained and maintained over time.
  • Cedar decks — natural wood with a warm look and good resistance to decay when maintained.
  • Composite and PVC decking — low-maintenance decking that doesn't need staining, installed on properly spaced framing.
  • Covered porches — front porches and covered decks with roofs that tie into the house properly.
  • Railings and stairs — wood, aluminum, glass and composite railings, plus stairs with correct rise and run.
  • Deck replacement — removing an old deck and rebuilding it, often reusing the layout but upgrading the structure.

How the project runs

  1. Design consultation. We look at your yard, the house connection and how you'll use the space.
  2. Drawings and quote. We provide a layout and an itemized quote covering footings, framing, decking, railings and stairs.
  3. Permits and locates. Many decks require a building permit, and we arrange utility locates through Ontario One Call before digging.
  4. Build. Footings, framing, inspections where required, decking, railings and stairs.

Good to know before you start

In Ontario, guards are required where a deck surface is more than 600 mm above the ground, and permits are commonly required for raised or attached decks. Each municipality sets its own permit rules, so we confirm requirements before building. Footings must extend below the frost line to prevent heaving. Composite decking often costs more upfront but needs less maintenance. Planning a new patio door at the same time? See exterior door installation. If you need privacy around the yard, we also build fences.

What affects the cost of decks & porches

Deck costs are driven by size, height, material and features. Pressure-treated decking is generally the most affordable, cedar costs more, and composite or PVC decking costs the most upfront but needs less maintenance. Raised decks need taller posts, more bracing and guards, and may need engineered details. Railings vary from simple wood to aluminum and glass systems, which can be a significant share of the budget. Stairs, multiple levels, built-in benches, privacy walls and roofs over porches all add labour and material. Removing an old deck and replacing undersized footings also affect cost. Your quote will itemize footings, framing, decking, railings and stairs.

Decks & Porches questions

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

Many decks do, especially those attached to the house or raised above grade. Requirements vary by municipality, and we confirm them during planning.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Many decks are built in under a week once materials and permits are ready. Larger decks, covered porches and complex railings take longer.

Is composite decking worth it?

If you want minimal maintenance and plan to stay in the home, composite is often worth the higher upfront cost. Pressure-treated wood costs less initially but needs regular staining.
