Exterior Door Installation

Your front door gets used thousands of times a year. We install entry and patio doors that close smoothly, seal tight and stay that way.

A new front door can change how your home looks from the street, and a well-installed patio door can make a room feel larger and brighter. Ironcrest Contracting replaces and installs exterior doors with the same focus every time: a level sill, plumb frame, proper flashing and hardware that works.

Door services

  • Front entry doors — steel and fibreglass entry doors, including sidelites, transoms and decorative glass.
  • Patio doors — sliding patio doors and hinged garden or French doors.
  • Side and garage entry doors — replacing worn, drafty secondary doors that often get overlooked.
  • New and widened openings — new door openings or wider openings, with a properly sized header where required.
  • Trim and finishing — exterior capping or trim, interior casing and adjustments for proper latching and sealing.
  • Hardware — installation of handlesets and deadbolts you choose, along with strike plates set into solid framing.

How the project runs

  1. Measure and assess. We measure the rough opening and check the sill, subfloor and framing for damage.
  2. Select and quote. We help you choose style, glass and swing, and provide an itemized quote. Custom doors usually require a lead time.
  3. Install. The old unit comes out, the opening is repaired and flashed, and the new door is set, shimmed and insulated.
  4. Finish and adjust. Trim and caulking are completed, weatherstripping and hardware are adjusted, and we walk you through the operation.

Good to know before you start

Most door replacements are completed in a single day so your home is secure the same night. Rotted subfloor beneath an old door sill is a common discovery, especially at patio doors; we'll show you and price the repair before proceeding. Changing the size of an opening may require a permit. If you're also planning window replacement or new siding, coordinating the work allows all openings to be flashed consistently. A new patio door is also a natural time to plan a new deck or landing.

What affects the cost of exterior doors

Exterior door pricing depends on the door material, size, glass and hardware. Steel doors are generally less expensive than fibreglass, and decorative or privacy glass, sidelites and transoms add cost. Patio doors vary by size, operation and the quality of rollers, seals and locks. Installation costs increase when the sill or subfloor is rotted, the opening is out of square or a new header is needed to widen it. Interior casing and exterior trim or capping are included to finish the opening. Custom sizes and colours may also extend lead times. Your quote will show the door, installation and any repairs as separate items.

Exterior Doors questions

Steel or fibreglass: which entry door is better?

Both are solid choices. Steel doors are often more affordable and secure, while fibreglass resists dents and can mimic wood grain. The right choice depends on style, exposure and budget.

How long does exterior door installation take?

Most standard replacements are completed in one day. Doors with sidelites or new openings can take longer.

Can you replace just the door slab?

In some cases, yes. If the frame is damaged or out of square, a full pre-hung unit usually performs better.
