Flooring Installation
A floor only looks as good as what's underneath it. We prepare the subfloor properly, then install flooring that stays flat, quiet and tight at the seams.
New flooring can change the feel of an entire house. Ironcrest Contracting installs flooring in single rooms, whole main floors and basements, and we treat preparation as the most important part of the job, because squeaks, gaps and cracked tile usually start with a poor subfloor.
Flooring we install
- Solid hardwood — nail-down hardwood for main and upper floors where a classic, refinishable floor is wanted.
- Engineered hardwood — real wood surface on a stable core, suitable for more locations than solid hardwood.
- Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) — water-resistant and durable, a common choice for kitchens, basements and busy households.
- Laminate — an affordable, hard-wearing option for living areas and bedrooms.
- Tile — porcelain and ceramic tile for entryways, bathrooms and kitchens, set over an appropriate underlayment.
How the project runs
- Measure and assess. We measure the space, check the subfloor for flatness and squeaks, and test concrete for moisture where needed.
- Product selection and quote. We explain the pros and cons of your options and provide a quote that includes prep, underlayment and transitions.
- Preparation. Removing old flooring, securing and levelling the subfloor and acclimating materials when the manufacturer requires it.
- Installation and finishing. Flooring, transitions, baseboard and shoe moulding, with a final walkthrough.
Good to know before you start
Older flooring such as sheet vinyl or vinyl tile from before the 1990s may contain asbestos and should be tested before removal; sometimes covering it is the better option. Furniture will need to be moved, and door bottoms may need trimming once new flooring is in. If you're also planning kitchen or basement work, it's usually best to coordinate flooring with that project so materials run continuously.
Not sure which material is right? Tell us how the room is used, whether there are pets or kids, and how long you plan to stay, and we'll give you a straight recommendation.
What affects the cost of flooring installation
Flooring costs depend on the material, the area and how much preparation the subfloor needs. Luxury vinyl plank and laminate are typically less expensive to install than solid hardwood or tile, which require more labour. Removing old flooring, especially glued-down materials or tile, adds time. Subfloors that are uneven, squeaky or damaged must be repaired or levelled first, and concrete may need moisture testing or a barrier. Stairs, many doorways and complex room shapes increase cutting and labour. Transitions, baseboard and shoe moulding are usually priced as part of the job. We measure and assess the subfloor before quoting so the price reflects the real conditions.
Flooring Installation questions
Can you install new flooring over existing floors?
Sometimes. Certain products can go over flat, sound existing floors, but height changes at doors, stairs and cabinets need to be considered. We'll recommend whether removal is the better choice.
How long does flooring installation take?
Most single rooms take a day or two, and larger areas take longer. Subfloor repairs, tile curing time and stairs add time.
What flooring is best for pets?
Luxury vinyl plank and tile are typically the most scratch- and water-resistant. Softer hardwoods show scratches more easily.
